- The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Shatrah held the defence of a master's thesis by the student (Hawraa Riyadh Abdul-Hassan), entitled:
- “A Molecular Study of Enteroviruses 70 and 71 as a Possible Cause of Eye Inflammation in Dhi Qar Governorate”.
- The study aimed to detect enteroviruses of the two types (EV70 and EV71) and their relationship with cases of viral eye inflammation, through the analysis of clinical samples collected from patients in Dhi Qar Governorate.
- The study included (120) eye swabs from people suffering from symptoms of viral eye inflammation, and the results showed:
- • The infection rate of EV70 was 15.8% of the total samples.
- • The infection rate of EV71 was 14.2%.
- As for the distribution between the sexes:
- • For EV70, the proportion of males was 52.6% compared with 47.4% for females.
- • For EV71, the proportion of males was 70.6% compared with 29.4% for females.
- These results indicate that both viruses showed higher infection rates in males than in females.
- After an extensive discussion of the thesis topic and the necessary scientific observations, the examination committee decided to make some amendments to the research, praising the student's efforts and awarding her the grade of Excellent for the defence of her thesis.
