With pride and honour, the College of Education for Girls/University of Shatrah celebrates one of the members of its teaching family on obtaining his doctorate, an achievement that embodies the fruit of effort and perseverance and reflects the spirit of scientific belonging that the college is keen to consolidate in its academic journey.
On the morning of Sunday, 29 / 3 / 2026, the College of Mass Communication / University of Baghdad – Department of Radio and Television witnessed the defence of the doctoral dissertation of Dr. Adnan Tuama Jajil, a lecturer at the College of Education for Girls / University of Shatrah, entitled:
(Cultural Identity in Television Talk Shows: A Critical Discourse Analysis Approach)
The examination committee consisted of the following professors:
Prof. Dr. Hussein Ali Noor – Chair
Prof. Dr. Tariq Ali Hammoud – Member
Prof. Dr. Muntaha Hadi Hindi – Member
Prof. Dr. Baqir Musa Jasim – Member
Prof. Dr. Wisam Mohammed Ahmed Nasr – External Member (Cairo University / Faculty of Mass Communication)
Prof. Dr. Hussein Dubai Hassan – Member and Supervisor
The dissertation studied cultural identity as a central semantic variable in media discourse, analysing how it is represented and reproduced within television talk shows, relying on critical discourse analysis to uncover the deep structures and the power relations and ideological dimensions they contain.
The study also focused on deconstructing the interaction between cultural identity, media discourse and the pragmatic context, with the aim of revealing the mechanisms of meaning construction and representation strategies and their role in shaping collective consciousness, within a rigorous scientific analysis that goes beyond surface description to explore the implicit cultural patterns.
At the conclusion of the defence, the dissertation was approved with the grade of (Very Good), amid the committee's praise for the researcher's scientific level, the importance of the topic and the depth of its findings.
The family of the College of Education for Girls / University of Shatrah extends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Adnan Tuama Jajil, asking Almighty God to grant him continued success in his academic career, in the service of science and higher education in our beloved Iraq.
